What is a cultural resources survey?

A cultural resources survey is an intensive survey of the built environment of a specified survey area. The survey includes photo documenting historic-age (fifty years of age or older) resources, including buildings, sites, and objects. Notes are taken on important architectural features, and Florida Master Site File forms are created for each documented resource. These forms are filed with the Division of Historical Resources and have no impact on property owners.

What is the purpose of this project?

    • Proactively identify historically and culturally significant properties and areas.
    • Assist the City in its planning efforts to maintain historic properties and prevent the loss of historic buildings and neighborhoods.
    • Preserve and promote historical, architectural, and cultural heritage.

What will the cultural resources survey involve?

    • Archival research
    • Field survey
    • Photo documentation
    • Recording oral histories

Will the survey provide any designations for properties?

No. The survey will provide recommendations for preservation plans and programs. Any new designations would require approval from the community and the Board of City Commissioners.

Why are we doing the survey?

Surveys are a preservation planning tool that can be used for numerous reasons. The existing survey was completed in 2009. Since the last survey, additional resources have been identified and some previously documented resources have been altered. The goal of this survey is to identify and document the historic and cultural heritage of the city to prevent further loss of historic resources.
