BACKGROUND
The City of Tarpon Springs has been awarded a grant through the Florida Resilient Coastlines Program administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Program (FDEP). This program supports local communities like Tarpon Springs in assessing vulnerabilities to coastal flooding and erosion and to develop strategies to make affected areas more resilient. The Vulnerability Assessment and Action Plan (VAAP) is aimed at preparing Tarpon Springs for the effects of coastal flooding, erosion, and ecosystem changes including consideration of the effect of rising sea levels. The VAAP will:
identify specific locations and assets that are vulnerable to flooding and rising sea levels,
lay the groundwork for updating community policies within the coastal management element,
develop a prioritized list of conceptual projects to reduce risk and vulnerability,
create a roadmap for the City to follow to reduce impacts to City assets due to flooding-related hazards,
and position the City for future grant funding through FDEP and other available sources to implement projects that will make the City more resilient.
