What is placemaking?

Placemaking is the process of creating quality places that people want to live, work, play, and learn in. It is an approach to planning, designing, building and maintaining public spaces that focuses on the people that use and benefit from the space.

What is the purpose of this project?

Develop a resident-driven vision and action plan to:

    • Enhance the area’s historic and cultural character
    • Promote economic development through historically/culturally appropriate businesses
    • Provide guidelines for sustainable historic preservation
    • Preserve and enhance the working waterfront
    • Develop functional and vibrant public spaces for residents and tourists
    • Improve access and mobility for all transportation modes

The project will develop a Vision Plan with recommendations for the character and scale of development, land use, public uses, and amenities. The Plan will evaluate the vision, objectives, policies, plan and guidelines in the Special Area Plan for the Community Redevelopment Area and the Sponge Docks and the Transect-Based Infill Code for the Sponge Docks and Community Redevelopment Area and provide recommendations for revisions or alternatives for placemaking and preservation planning in Greektown.
